5 Fun Halloween Decorations on a Budget

These 5 Halloween decorations are our favorite low cost ideas to share with you. Halloween is Katie’s favorite holiday so we’ve always decorated for it. Now that she’s out on her own keeping the cost down while still having fun is important to her.

For this post I’ve joined a group of friends to bring you lots of Halloween inspiration. Check out the links at the end of the post for all of their Halloween decoration ideas.

Bats

Use this download as a pattern to cut out bats in 3 sizes. The number you make will depend on the space you are putting them in. Adding these bats to your ceiling or wall this year will be the spotlight of your party!

To start, figure out where you want them. I tend to try and think about them ”entering” through an outside door, or even the garage, and then “exiting” down a hallway, into another room, or out another exterior door. This will help in the planning of placement.

I always start with the larger bats to help me figure out the flight path. I also tend to do it in a cone shape, starting small and having them fan out.

Once I get my path figured out by placing the large bats, I then move to the medium bats. The medium bats will help to define that path even more and fill in.

Last would be the small bats and they just go everywhere to fill in and make it look fuller.

Once complete you will have a decoration that is sure to impress!

Black & White Pumpkins

These black & white pumpkins were super simple Halloween decoration. I used the same technique as I did for my fall yarn wrapped pumpkins. Since this yarn was super chunky, I was able to use the 4-5 inch pumpkin form that I got from Dollar Tree. Hurry to get some before they run out. There are lots of uses for them past the fall holiday season so grab several while you can get them for just $1 each. Check out this YouTube video for the complete instructions on my yarn wrapped pumpkins.

Ghosts Halloween Decorations

The ghosts are super simple. I love how they billow in the wind.

Supplies for Halloween Ghosts

  • White Fabric – I used an old sheet
  • Wood Blocks – I used a scrap 2×2
  • Dowel Rods
  • Styrofoam Balls
  • Hot Glue Gun & Extra Glue Sticks
  • A Black Sharpie

Instructions for Ghosts Halloween Decorations

1. Create a base from a scrap piece of wood. The wood we used was a 2×2 and we cut them about 3 inches long. Just about any scrap block of wood would work.

2. Drill a small hole in the center of the board and hot glue a dowel rod into it.

3. Insert the dowel rod into a foam ball about 1/2 inch. Pull the ball back off and put some hot glue in the hole before reinserting it.

4. Cut a circle out of an old sheet. I measured the height of my base/dowel rod/foam ball, doubled it and added 2 inches to make them long enough to cover the base.

5. Put a dab of hot glue on the top of the foam ball and drape the fabric circle over it. You can now cut some jagged edges into the bottom of your fabric if you want.

6. Finally, draw eyes on your ghosts with a black sharpie.

Skeletons

Skeletons add a classic spooky touch to your Halloween décor. While plastic skeletons are popular, we think a DIY skeleton is so much more fun. Our easy to make wooden skeleton is just the item to hang near your door to greet those trick-or-treaters. This skeleton is about 48” tall and is made from paint stir sticks, plywood and zip ties. You can get the complete printable and instructions in this post.

Burlap Banner Halloween Decoration

This fun banner can be used either indoors or outdoors. With all the colored dots, it adds a little bit of whimsey to your décor.

Supplies for Burlap Banner

  • Roll of 6” wide burlap ribbon
  • Twine
  • Acrylic Paint – We used black orange and white
  • Stamper brushes – We used 3 sizes
  • Black vinyl

Instructions for Burlap Halloween Banner

1. Cut triangles out of your burlap with about 2″ left square at the top. Our cut pieces were a total of  11″ tall. You will need enough triangles to spell out whatever your going to make your banner say. For us, we spelled out Happy Halloween so we needed 14 triangle pieces.

2. Cut a piece of twine the length of your pieces plus the length you want for hanging on the ends. Take each burlap piece, add a strip of hot glue on the edge and fold the top square piece over the twine.

3. Paint dots on your banner pieces in whatever colors you want. We used 3 colors with 3 sizes of stamper brushes. Use a generous amount of paint for each dot. Make sure that you have something under your banner pieces as your paint will bleed through. You’ll need to clean your brushes and let your banner dry between each color.

4. Choose a font and cut your letters out of vinyl using a Cricut or other cutting machine. Weed the letters and use transfer paper to position letters on each banner piece to spell out your saying.

  5. Oh, Janet, I don’t know where to start – I love all of your Halloween decorations so much! I used to make bats when the boys were small but they were nowhere near as great as yours! I love that the skeletons are moveable and that you can put them in all sorts of positions – such a great idea! The mini ghosts would look great on a table outside my door – definitely pinning them all!
