I have the PERFECT SOLUTION for you! I have worked out at home for several years and one of my staple exercise tools is a workout ball, but it is a challenge to find room for it. Here is how the home gym space started with the workout balls on the floor.Can you relate to this messy area?
This small space was drab, boring, lifeless (I think all those words mean the same thing, but it makes a point right??) and most importantly was lacking usable exercise area. How am I suppose to get my six pack abs and buns of steel in this room?
Have you had any luck with finding suitable, inexpensive options for workout ball storage? When I perused the internet I was disappointed with the high cost and lack of options. That was when I decided to come up with a plan to create my own Workout Ball Holder.
I am super excited to show you how to create a CHEAP, EASY, FUNCTIONAL and CUSTOMIZABLE way to store your workout balls.The Workout Ball Holder only costs around $3 to make and you need only one 2×4.Since my home gym is small the Workout Ball Holder needed to create more workout space by getting the workout balls off of the floor, as well as be easily accessible during my workouts. I also had to create a holder that would fit two different sized workout balls.

TOOLS FOR WORKOUT BALL HOLDER
- Chop saw/miter saw and/or table saw
SUPPLIES FOR WORKOUT BALL HOLDER
- 1 – 2x4x8
- 2 1/2 inch and 1 1/4 inch screws
- Sand paper/sander
- 3 – L brackets
CUTS FOR WORKOUT BALL HOLDER
My workout balls measured 24 inches and 16 inches. YOUR CUTS will vary depending on the size of your workout balls.
- 1 – 2×4 at 40 inches (support)
- 1 – 2×4 at 11 inches (extensions)
- 1 – 2×4 at 15 inches (extensions)
MEASURE your workout ball and keep in mind the extensions of the Workout Ball Holder need to measure over half the diameter of the workout ball in order for the ball to not roll off. I cut my extensions about an inch longer than the final length because of an additional cut made later for the angle.
Step 1) Measure and make a diagonal cut length wise from corner to corner of the four pieces (2- 15 inch and 2- 11 inch) to create four angled pieces (extensions).
Step 2) Using a miter saw, cut the WIDE end of each extension at a 3 degree angle. Cut approximately 1 inch off of each end so final lengths will be approximately 14 inches and 10 inches. Cut the 3 degree angle in the direction the arrow is pointing. This will make the extension pieces tilt slightly upwards just enough to prevent the workout balls from rolling off.
Step 3) Attach the extensions to the 40 inch 2×4 support. I measured and marked the back of the support piece approximately 2 1/2 inches from the end. I drilled the holes and drove in two 2 1/2 inch screws for each extension. I left about 1 3/4 inch on each side of the ends on the support piece. For the 24″ ball I placed the gap between the extensions 12 inches apart and 10 inches apart for the 16″ ball. The space between the workout balls is 10 inches apart. Step 4) Now this baby is ready for some STAINING LOVE. For the stain I layered Minwax in Dark Walnut and Weathered Oak, then finished it off with another coat of Dark Walnut to give it both brown and gray tones. I sanded lightly between the coats and sanded again after the final coat to give it an aged look. Now the workout ball holder is ready to be hung on the wall.
Step 5) I picked my spot on the wall where the ball holder would hang. I hung it about 25 inches from the ceiling. This would allow enough room for the larger ball to be removed without hitting the ceiling. I used a stud finder to locate the studs and made sure my measurements on the wall lined up with my L brackets as well as the wall studs. I used three L brackets, 1 1/4 inch screws to attach the L brackets to the wood and 2 1/2 inch screws to attach the L brackets to the wall studs. To help with placement of the L bracket I used a scrap piece of wood and placed it behind the support 2×4 while I drilled a pilot hole and then drove in the screw to attach the L bracket.
I used 3 L brackets and placed them approximately 16 inches apart so they would go into a wall stud. Then I finished up by drilling a pilot hole into the wall and stud, and screwed the L brackets and workout ball holder onto the wall.

It’s very easy to pop them off the holder. I just push up at the middle of the ball and with just a little bit of force it rolls off. Keep in mind that my ceilings are 9 ft and I am super tall 😉 at 5′ 3″and I am able to get the workout balls down and up pretty easily with no step stool. I am super happy with how it turned out.
